I type my story outlines out on Word and save them all to a hard drive. That way, I have them all in one place and don't need to worry about whether or not a platform changes on me.

I usually write my story outlines on paper, Word documents (OpenOffice is also a good alternative), or the notes app on my phone. Then, I save them to a USB or Dropbox.

As with anything you write or draw, and you want to save safely, you should be saving at at least 2 places with a third option being better. The first is your computer (obvious). The second is a portable harddrive. This harddrive should be a disk type, not a ssd or flashdrive. Those types of devices will fail without warning and when they do there is zero you can do abou it. The data is lost forever. A disk harddrive can fail/stop working and you can still get the data off it. Short of smashing it, you can recover the data. A long term portable harddrive is also a good idea, one you don't have plugged into the wall most of the time. The final third option is a off-site storage place. This is a cloud service or something like it. The point it is not at your house. This protects you from fire/flood/burglaries/etc. All companies that deal with data have back-up off-site. If you are serious, so should you.

I usually write my outlines by hand then I will type them into a TextEdit doc. It's a free software and allows you to save docx files if needed.

I use plain text documents lmao :stuck_out_tongue: Chuck 'em all in a folder, one copy on my computer, one backup copy in Dropbox :]

(For some reason I find it easier to casually make a new .txt file if I want to expand something, whereas making a new word document or something feels like a Big Deal so it kind of impedes the 'spontaneity' of my process of getting raw ideas down XD)

My head. I really just write whatever what sticks in my memory. I think it's a good way to leave out mundane and unnecessary details, case if I don't remember it, I doubt my readers would.

Or I could be delusional, who knows. :sweat_02:

The closest thing I have is an ideas doc on Google docs where I read and put random things in it every day.

I use Notepad++ for chapter outlines & sidenotes, only check on them if I forget something.

I use Evernote so I can work on it on my phone too. Once it's turned into a manuscript, I transfer it into a Word document with all the fancy chapter title, page number, etc, which will also be stored in a cloud storage.

Thank you all for the recommendations, trust me, you've cut me some slack : )

I write on docs, but mirror posting on other platforms can also help if you want a back up! I currently also mirror my novel on honeyfeed and wattpad, but other platforms may also work.
