So, I make a novel. I come to realize trying to hit my goal of a certain amount of context for my story, comes with a price. I have been in writers block since my last post and I barely was able to push through that. I feel bad for my subscribers and everyone who reads my story. I just, don't know what to do. I took time away from technology. Did some adventures to see if it sparked. But I'm at a total lost....

Any ideas?

Do you have all the events of the story planned out and just don't know how to bridge the next event to where you've left off last?

Or are unsure of where to take the story from where you have it now?

Whenever I hit a writer's block, I like to go back to world building (most, if not all, my stories rely on some fantasy concepts) and character development stuff. Silly things like how they would act in different settings and alternate universes

But in case your story isn't like that, perhaps you can go back and reassess your story's outline. Do you know where it will go? If not, I would probably suggest you have an idea on the main points/events in the story.
If you're under a deadline of some sort (even if you aren't, you can always set one up for yourself), you can change the way you work. Instead of motivation to write, rely more on discipline to write.

One thing I do that I found helps often is just writing badly. Just wing the next chapter and type out whatever comes to mind. The point of this is so that when you go back to read it, you'll at least have some ideas and know what you, at least, don't want to do.

Just something that I do at times, haha.

Write a short story, or write something you plan on happening after the part you are stuck in. Some times just keep the act of writing or the momentum going breaks it lose. If your blockage is a fork in the road via the plotline, write both paths down. One will speak louder than the other.

Great news... anything you write in conjunction to a story can be used later or as a special episode or reveal for promotional reasons ^_^

I’m a bit confused on what your goal is. Do you want to reveal a certain amount of backstory, hit a word count, or simply finish the next episode for upload?

If you know where you will be going eventually, try writing a scene that will occur in the future. That might help you bridge from where you are now to where you want to be later.

I also like listening to music that reminds me of whatever I’m writing because it helps me imagine the actual scene better. For example, the majority of my settings are in some medieval town, so I just look that up in YouTube with the keyword “music” and lots of stuff comes up. Being able to visualize what is happening now might help spark some ideas about what will happen next.

Keep writing. Write absolutely anything, even a grocery list. Don't go on adventures without writing something. Bring a pen and notebook with you if you're away from your computer. Just keep writing. Eventually, you'll work the kinks out.

i think this podcast has some good points on writers block (sorry im always plugging DOL)

firstly, if you cant make your next deadline, you cant make your next deadline. thats okay, and your readers will understand and be patient. they know that youre doing this for free.

secondly, this is a learning moment: next time you have a chance, try to build up enough of the story to make a few posts, so the things youre posting each week are things you wrote about a month ago. this is called a buffer; it gives you wiggle room if you get stuck, and also makes it easier to go back and edit and work backwards.

If you're stuck, the chances are the roadblock isn't where you are now but is actually way further back. read back over your story and look for the point where youre getting snagged now. it could also remind you about some plot threads you need to get back to.

alternatively, think forward to the next plot point / place you need your characters to be. so, 'steve is at the icecream shop.' then ask why, and work your way backwards to where you are now. steve is at the icecream shop. why? because he wants icecream. why? because its hot. why? because theres a heatwave. why? because his arch nemesis stephan created a weather ray. why? he owns the icecream shop.

This right here truly helps a lot!! A few others too ontop of yours, but this really does help! Thank you! Hopfully I can use some of the tricks everyone said and figure my way through this. Thank you so much! And never be ashamed to plug lol. I love that stuff.

I agree with “wing badly” if you want to remain consistent. I’ve had plenty of blocks where I’m just typing stuff and not really feeling it. I’ll read back through some of my old chapters for inspiration (I’ve even found ways to incorporate what I’ve written in the past with my new chapters) and then I revisit what I’ve written like a day or two later and fix it up before posting. But I do find it helpful to revisit old chapters. I’d written some things that I’d completely forgotten about and brought them back up in new chapters and created storylines out of them.
But my main form of dealing with writer’s block IS taking time away and returning when I feel inspired. I’d rather have good chapters than forced chapters. And I really do get more pumped to write if I look back to what I’ve written before. It gives me he incentive to continue on.
Also, I’ve been inspired by music lyrics. Sometimes listening to music will pull a thought or two out of ya.

Hi @Minerva_Matues I'm Michael. And I get where you are coming from. Most people after a while get writers block. I've wrote a few novels & made a view comics. Writers block can sometimes be to hard to overcome. It's very great you took time from technology. When I got writers block I didn't draw or think of anything for a entire year! Not to say that will happen to you! Anyway all I'm saying is I understand. But I have some tips!

One thing you could do "if you already haven't" Is to do nothing. Don't think about your novel while you're taking your break. However you should at least stay online, maybe Instagram, Twitter?

Another thing I've learn is Writers Block can come from depression. Not to say you are, of course.
However sometimes we can be depressed without even knowing it! I was in the same spot spending a entire year doing nothing creative. Then I started meditation. Some don't believe it works. But trust me It does! You just have to find the right one for you! There's some really good ones on Youtube for confidents & finding yourself & motivation!

You could also do a test.
Try thinking of some new ideas for a new series. Hear me out!
If you start thinking of some really sweet ideas, then you know what that means?

It could mean It's not you! It's the series! You're mind just can't process the story! Why?
Maybe deep down you don't like the way something is? Either a character or something in the chapter!
Same has happened to me! Believe it or not I have a lot of series that I had to stop because I had writers block.

I do have words of advice!
3 months from now, if you're still having the same problem! & This is coming from a creator to a creator. It's time to think of something new! And try again! You don't wanna waste your time waiting & waiting. I'm not saying give up, in fact keep trying! Maybe even force yourself to write then maybe you'll get back in the mood!

I hope this helps you!

I love being on my twitter. Just my instagram is more personal and not really "Ad" of my story if that makes sense lol. I luckily have been trying to just ignore my story hoping to get that spark of something. I am revisiting a little on my previous chapters and trying to figure out what to do next. As for depression, I'm just a wonderful ball of that! lol. No worries. I'm fine. Meditation for me never works because my mind is always go go go go. But I have found the things I enjoyed doing.

I feel like comics is easier then novels, because people I see post like, a few panels a week and it is less words just art. But as a novel I shoot for 700-1.5k in words. And its hard cause I don't want to seem like I am slacking in my words. Not saying comics is hard, I bet they are. Just easier with "Painting the picture"

Thank you! I truly mean it!

I will try my best! Thank you Maps!!! I usually listen to music when I type because it gives me more inspiration in words instead of silence LOL
