Trying my hand at drawing a real comic about a witch and her girlfriend in Scotland mixing pagan witchcraft with Scottish folklore and legend. I've come from a background of drawing amateur political cartoons for around 3 years but this is my first real attempt at a long-form comic of any kind

I'm Andy (31). I've been doodling cartoons for years but have only now started my first real comic about a witch, her girlfriend, magick and Scottish folklore

I absolutely adore info pages in comics, so I had to create them in my comic, here's my first one, all about those mischievous spirits, Boggarts! My absolute favourite info page of all time is this one from Stand Still Stay Silent, covering the languages of the old world (present day) and where…

Thanks all. It's cool to see other folk hiding things. It's especially interesting to see that many of you are like me, even though you would love folk to notice these things, you're jealously guarding your secrets, not giving away what you've hidden even here

I have allowed trolls like this to bully me into not doing projects so often. Agree with others, just block them, but I understand how it feels to be bullied, "just ignore them" isn't always an easy thing to do. Distraction is helpful though, focus on the good comments, the constructive criticism,…

So I've just made it to page 12 of my comic and I received a comment from a reader. That alone made me super happy, given that I've only 9 subscribers and two of those are myself and my mum! But it wasn't just the comment that made me happy, the reader had noticed something in the artwork that I w…

Glad to see this thread taking off, I've given you all a sub, I see some of us are out of the <10 club! But let's be sure to stick around this thread to support others!

You can post links by just copying the web address to your comic on a line by itself  Here's yours: Subscribed

Oooo, interesting. My understanding of this must be specific to city centres, that would make sense. This particular knowledge of mine is specifically from an episode of 99% Invisible, this one to be particular:

That last one is something I'm going to take note of for my own series. Though I think often one of the reasons folk can miss out on lore is that it's hard to build a world, especially a fantasy one, so they stick to the story and don't do the world building. I also find myself writing bits of lo…

Absolutely, that's exactly what it is. But most cities don't have those spaces between buildings. They're all terraced and the only spaces between them are the spaces where the roads and pavements are.

A mischievous boggart has been mischievous!

The other trope that annoys me that's similar to this is alleys. Back alleys simply don't exist in many (most?) cities, yet they're always shown in films and comics as the place some dodgy thing is happening. How many movies have you seen with something happening down an alley in New York? Would …

So much this! I just thought that robin was a bad model of what they thought a robin should look like! Never occurred to me that it was based on a real bird they have in America. And raccoons too, such animals simply don't exist on the British Isles yet folk don't seem to know this. The one tha…

I'm three weeks into publishing my comic, currently only at a rate of two pages a week so I've got six pages out so far having started on 1st October. The story came to mind just after Halloween of 2018, I wrote character profiles for main and minor characters over the course of a month and doodle…

Ah, fair point, I forget that in many countries you have to pay tuition to go to college/uni. Tuition is free here in Scotland. That would definitely explain why they choose school over uni. Although I think in Twilight it was implied that Edward's family was loaded.

That's actually a really fair point! I'd left school and was in college at 16, when I later made it to uni the youngest person in my class was 15! There's just no reason why they need to need to go to school!

Teenagers in high school who have the maturity level of 100 year old vampires. I just don't buy it. I mean, come on, just listen to the mortified podcast to know there's no such thing as a mature teenager! And I know because I thought I was one of them, but gods, if I had a time machine I'd just…

I saw the "less than 100 subscribers" thread and just felt a tad silly posting in there. This is the thread for those of us who are so new to this, they can count their subscribers on their fingers! Possibly not even in need of more than one hand! Let's help each other out, including some friend…

Indeed. However, I know fans often like this stuff and I don't want to be the one who turns fans away when they express themselves in ways I wouldn't have chosen to. So whilst I don't like it, I don't think I'd want to tell them that as I don't want them to feel unwanted. My absolute favourite w…

Indeed, I'm lucky to have written a fairly details script during one of my super motivated and creative phases, but yeah, it's not very useful advice when you're in the lower phase of it all. I agree with the other advice that's it's okay to take a break. Ultimately, none of it is important compa…

Done, I've gone for maximum emails! I may regret it in time but for these early days it'll give me that kick up the backside to get over here more often!

I know exactly what you mean, for me I'd be fine with Fan Fiction (though right now I can only envy those who are big enough to have fans, let alone fans invested enough to write fiction with my characters!) however I have two fears of fan fiction. One, what if they come up with fan fiction that a…

This is a tough one and I don't think there's a one size fits all solution. It's something I've been struggling with a lot recently, but I've found that one thing that helps me is having a fully scripted story or a note book full of ideas for strips to work with. For instance, I may not have the …

Oh I'm really nervous in posting this, I'm still learning so much as it's extremely early days, but I'd love to know what you think of my comic! It's only 5 pages in so far. Please be gentle!

I'm so sorry guys, I'm still new to the land of Forums and Tapas so I hadn't realised I wouldn't receive an email when replies came through! I've pinned a tab open now to get me to check more often  So glad to hear I'm not the only one! I hadn't realised the Mature section was a new thing so that…

It's driving me crazy! Every time I'm on the main Tapas website, I spot the Mature section link in the top banner and immediately go to click on it because I've mistaken the little red M badge next to it as a notification badge. Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Aha, I just realised the last line of your original post! Serves me right for skim reading!

It's not web comic specific but I'd say Understand Comics by Scott McCloud is essential reading. Followed by the sequel, Making Comics.

Yeah, I don't think it'd win me over, but the thing is, I couldn't possibly say that my experience is reflective of other comic readers. I'd wait for a few more replies before throwing out everything you're working on
