Most comics nowadays use fonts for speech balloons, it's pretty much a given. It' not s a bad thing; as long as speech bubbles are legible, they don't really effect the quality of the comic. But I personally hand-letter, and I'm wondering if there are any other hand-letterers here? If so, what are your reasons for hand-lettering?
For me, I hand-letter because it's both easier and more rewarding for me than messing around with fonts and vectors (I used a font at least in part for most of my first comic, and only switched over to complete hand-lettering when I started my current one) I don't have to worry about the speech bubbles matching the art's aesthetic, and plus I get a little bit of extra expressiveness in the writing. This makes hand-lettering worth it to me, even though I know if I'm doing it well, most people won't even notice it's hand-lettered.
