So this is a random thing my friend mentioned to me today. She decided to watch MLP for the first time in forever and something she realized is that (for the people who don’t know MLP, this is the MC) Twilight Sparkle look nothing like her parents color pallet wise, or at least like her father.

So like, is this a mistake on the designing crew or could it be intentional?

It looks to me like her mom is supposed to be purple+white while her dad is midnight blue. Twilight Sparkle's not blue or white at all, but she does have a combination of light purple (like her mom's mane) and deep purple (like her dad's deep blue). The pink is still very different, but maybe that bright coloring is just a sign that she's youthful. It sort of resembles hair highlights, which I would associate with young, vivacious people (that sentence must make me sound fifty years older than I am).

Purple eyes aren't exactly a midpoint between blue and yellow, though. I think at that point, the designers were just having fun with eye colors. They probably didn't think "what eye colors would Twilight Sparkle's parents have," but "what colors would these two ponies have (with no reference to Twilight Sparkle)." So they looked at each design separately and gave them the eye colors that looked best on them individually.

You could also theorize that one of her grandparents had pink hair and purple eyes.

I don't think the designers wanted viewers to take the hereditary coloring TOO literally, like scientifically literally.

...Wow, that was a long post

My friend thanks you for answering her question that has been plaguing her for the last hour

It's also a common theme throughout the show. If you look at Apple Jack's family, you'll notice she and her siblings don't look alike and don't look like their grandmother, only sharing a few colors. And they also only have kind of similar colors to their parents. It's just how they did things on the show.

Yeah, since MLP thrives on the notion of individuality, my guess is everypony was designed color-independent (and color isn’t a genetic trait that’s passed down). Pinkie Pie and Maude are polar opposites in color scheme as well (And I’m sure you could go through most of the families and find a series of inconsistent color schemes).

Twilight's mother's designs are based off Twilight from the 80s.
Tho the OG Twilight is pink

Tho if they were using a bad screen shot from the show, she might be mistaken as a much paler pink

The blue dad might have been done to look like Shining Armor. It could be they were trying to match his pallet more. IDK.
