I work between 40 and 50 hours a week as an assistant manager / cashier, so i am pretty busy. I used to have a nice large buffer, but I lost it when I got sick and then a week later had a relative die. I lost all motivation to draw and stopped for a while. Sadly my buffer is all gone, so I am on a bit of a hiatus.
I also have an animation I am working on for an internship, so that takes up a large part of my time. When i am in myA game I can finish 2 pages a week from white paper to pencils, inks, screentones and text/editing. Working traditionally is a bit slower, however I simply cannot replicate the look digitally. Though honestly I doubt I would even if I could. I sell my originals at conventions and plan to use them as rewards for future patreon and crowdfunding.
My advice is have a HUGE buffer. Even if all you have done is the inks of a whole chapter, all you need to do is the colors and text. It will save you a ton of time.
I have absolutely zero life. My schedule is the following and I stick to it religiously unless i HAVE to deviate.
430am - get up to get ready for work
530am - clock in (mon,tues, thr)
1030am - clock in (wed, fri)
3pm/4pm - clock out (depends on paperwork level)
5pm - eat dinner / clean house
6pm - start drawing (5-10min break at the top of each hour)
12-1am - bed
On weekends 7am-12/1am is ALL work only stopping to eat, stretch or use bathroom. It varies from animation to comic work. I also live in a tiny town, 800 people, so I am far away from any city, about 1hr, so there is nothing to do here. I have to be on call 24/7 as assistant manager and I usually get called in a few times a week. I just got back to whatever my normal schedule is at the time I get off work from being called in. So I never go do anything, it is an hour away at the city to do anything, too far away since I am on call. If I go up there, I usually have a good reason, like groceries or a doctor appt.
I can easily spend a whole night on a single panel, but I try not to. I am slowly getting faster. I take about 10 to 15hrs per page. It sucks though when your schedule is so unpredictable due to being called in and never knowing how much time you get. I had 57 hours last week due to call ins and barely had any time except the weekend to work. This sunday i wont have much time, called in for that day already.
In a way I can see uni as harder, but I also see outside of uni harder depending on circumstance. When you have bills to pay and a home to keep and car to drive and insurance and all those other adult rhings, it gets WAY harder. For me personally, uni was WAY easier. I was far more productive than I am now. But everyone is different.
Overall between work and animation/comics, I pull about 90-100 hours a week. However I refuse to post pages I feel bad about or incomplete, so until my buffer is built back up, i am on haitus or post irreularly. My readers are generally very forgiving, so I am happy for that.
Overall you can choose quality or quantity. It is smart to have a ton of work done before hand. Learn how fast you work and adjust your buffer to that. Understand that while you have one, things happen and buffers can be lost. Try to maintain or GROW your buffer each week if possible. ouo
