Since uploading a version of your comic on your own non-English language is supported, I had assumed it was also acceptable to comment on your own language if you know the comic author is from your own country or one that speaks your language (Spanish, in my case). But I just dropped a comment in Spanish to another creator (he had mentioned his English wasn't the best, mine isn't either and I had trouble translating my thoughts, so I said why not, this is silly) and someone told me that I had to speak English on Tapastic.

Now, I obviously understand I'm expected to keep my forum posts, general comments and info in English. I even reply to comments in English most of the time, even to my own Spanish speaking friends (it feels weird, but you do it for the community). But is this mandatory for comments too? I mean, if you can have a translated version of the comic it means you can have non-English speaking readers... does this mean they can't comment?

I'm not going to use Spanish around anymore since it apparently annoys some people, but I would still like to know if it is indeed against the rules and readers who aren't good at English cannot comment even if they know you would understand. I was going to tell my Spanish-speaking readers on the comic's Facebook page to come check the comic here, since it looks all pretty on mobile devices, but it's probably a bad idea if they can't comment. So... I need to know the official opinion on this subject, please blush

I would find it bit weird if any language wasn't okey to comment with, as long as it would stay civil. And that's actually the only reason I'd see why english would be recommended, so that the moderators can tell if the person is really being a douche.

But this is just imo, I haz no facts confused

Yeah, I thought about that too. I mean, I see a lot of reasons for allowing comments in other languages, but I also see some reasons why they maybe aren't. That's why I want to know the rules so I can play a fair game here and not upset people unnecessarily wink

Wow. Well I was pretty happy when I discovered that even some German Readers started to follow my series and I had a little chat with most of them (in the comment section) in German. No one complained... Of course I would switch to a private message if the conversation is longer.. but I always thought it should be perfectly fine.

I understand the moderation argument but in case someone would report a comment it could be checked without too much trouble. Speaking English isn't easy and while Tapastic already helped me a lot to improve my skills and feel more confident about them, I still feel the limits and... "lack of personality" when I have to write in English. Using my mother language while talking to fans from my country makes me feel more connected to them..Of course it's important not to exclude anyone.. but I always thought a little chat wouldn't bother anyone.

Long story short.. I'm not sure if there is a rule at all.. I hope it rather is a guideline. But I surely can understand your point and I personally wouldn't bother about short conversations between two people in another language, as long as the main content is written in English.

I'm pretty sure you can comment in whatever language you are most comfortable in. English is hardly the epitome of language and the site is partially based in south korea so does that mean we have to speak korean, I think not.:V

I have never heard of a rule like that before and it doesn't make much sense. I am limited to only understanding English, but I still find it really cool to see comments in other languages, like on Taihen's wall you'll see German or on @felipechoque 's comic you'll find, what I think is, Spanish comments. I can name off some more creators, but my point is that they add a sense that we are not just in America, but part of the world.
I am really curious as to whether it was a staff member, which I doubt, or a reader who was too lazy to copy paste and use something like Google Translate to read your conversation.

I am still trying to figure out how I have never heard this before if it could be real.

That's ridiculous is someone tells you have to comment in another language. You should comment as you please (with respect to the creators feelings ofcourse). smiley

Fine then people talking to @sow_ay in French on her comic. There are also others who talked to Felipe in Spanish before you joined Tapastic and there are a lot of Korean conversations on the site too. My point is that I have no clue as to why you, @lira, were singled out when people have been using languages other than English for almost as long as Tapastic has been a site. Maybe @michaelson can offer a better opinion on the subject, but I say that use the most convenient language you want and that it is amazing that you can talk to two sets of fans.

I'd never imagine Tapastic would have a rule against language diversity, as the website is clearly intended to be super inclusive to everyone!
I'd say it was just a misguided and unfortunate comment by a reader. @lira You should keep using spanish for comments if you want, I don't think the admins will stop you or anything. smile

Oh, the person who mentioned I shouldn't speak in Spanish didn't say it in a mean way! She/he was really polite about it, and apparently did so because he/she thought the author of the comic was an English speaker. No one was being rude, I'm sorry if I made it look as if I was complaining.

No, I just wanted to know the guidelines about languages in comments, that's all. In case I was doing something wrong or had assumed things worked differently than they actually do.

Thank you all for your opinions and comments! I have yet to see someone commenting in another language on a comic page so I was a bit worried, that's all blush

That's funny, I never thought about this. I discovered tapastic with an email from the staff saying something like "we want to extend our website to others places". And some others probably discovered like that too. I would have missed so many cool people without that ! smile

I speak French when people comment in French and I don't see any problem about this. That'd be such a shame. I mean, why would we not accept our own language ? The other users can ask what we mean if they really want to know. I often even keep French words on my comics (like when I swear), because that's fun to share and I think people like discovering new useless words in another language, maybe they can show-off a bit after.
Many people here are not totally fluent (and so am I) and learn a lot thanks to the internet. And people are understanding and cool with that !
Like @codesurfer23, I like seing other languages here, it shows that tapastic is not limited ! It's fantastic to be able to talk to people on the other side of the world.

There are no rules against posting in other languages - I think that's s

I didn't really even consider that before. Interesting point. I think Google Translate is pretty good though, at least good enough to give me an indication of what the comment says.

100%

Everyone should feel comfortable commenting in any language. I highly encourage it.

We're also moving towards adding features where you can upload the comic in any language.

We are home to a global audience, we have artists and readers from all over the world and I think it's immensely important to celebrate that smile

I had the same issue with nox.fox because my english is really basic et doesn't allow formulating deep and intellectuals comments ^^

The advantage of commenting in english is : I've noticed that others commenters like taking part of a discussion. It's really fun ^^ A real interaction between users. That's why I try to comment in english most of the time.

@michaelson thank you!

@LittleEndian I feel you. I hate it when you have something really important yo want to say but you don't have the right words in English.
But those particular cases aside, I also like commenting in English for the same reason, I've noticed people tend to reply to other readers' comments a lot. It's fun smile
