So in addition to publishing on Tapas, I'm thinking about publishing on Webtoons as well? I know that the format for webtoons is a little different compared to tapas, so does anyone have any tips and whatnot before I actually make it happen?

I've found that Webtoons readers are a lot harsher and more impatient than readers on Tapas, and Webtoons as a platform is more eager to censor and potentially shadowban creators. (It's happened to a LOT of folks I know, even folks who have tame stories.)

So, my advice is be ready for that, but still go for it! Try to make updates a little longer, and try to stay consistent about updating. Webtoons REALLY wants consistent updates!
If you get it right though, you can get a lot of readers and comments from Webtoons, so it's absolutely worth pursuing.

I think maybe find a comic on Webtoons you think is similar to yours and study what they're doing and how they're updating. Just peeking over your comic, for Webtoons you'll def need to shorten/edit your summary (this is a good thing to do in general though, and I can help if you want it) and I would suggest using some not hand written font. I know hand written font is a lot of fun but it's hard to read for a lot of folks and also presents accessibility issues. Your comic isn't super far along though so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to go back and fix!

And er, yeah! It's a lot like uploading to Tapas with some core features missing (the backend for uploading is a mess, LOL) but if you can make it work, it's worth it!

ALSO, try to get your pages to their exact specifications lest you run into some pixelation issues XoX Here to help if you have any questions!

^^ I started uploaded on Webtoon but I decided to wait until I have a fully finished 'chapter' and upload the whole thing, especially for the first 3 episodes (because after 3 Webtoon asks readers to subscribe, so it's even more important to have a strong opening haha)

From my experience
Rates don't matter as much
It seems there are a lot of troll rating stories with 1 star just because, even Webtoon acknowledge this and is supposedly working on ways to stop the abuse of that system.

Check for comments every once in a while
Webtoons won't give you notifications on anything: likes, comments, rates, etc.
You can like/dislike comments, reply, and I guess it would have helped me for engagement with those who took the time to leave a comment.

Prepare your thumbnails/covers
They have a different format to that of Tapas, on both dimensions and that you shouldn't put the name of your series on the image.

I actually found that Tapas thumbnails work fine for Webtoons! So, I just make a Tapas thumbnail first (because it's larger) and then upload to Webtoons and viola~ A little bit less work to do per update

I've had pretty good success on Webtoon so far, so I'd definitely recommend posting on both platforms! Having had a quick look at your work, I'd advise the following when you go to post there:

  • Reformat for vertical. It must look attractive and readable on a mobile phone screen. The overwhelming majority of Webtoon readers read on their phones. Generally, you never want more than two panels side-by-side, and even then, only when there's good reason to format them that way.
  • Change all the hand written text to actual fonts. Including the sound effects and such. Komika is free, I'd recommend that.

Webtoon have a huge audience, so you'll probably do well there! (And my readers over there are absolute gosh-dang sweethearts, I love them!) But they definitely have different preferences to the more 'old school' webcomic audience Tapas has.

yes, absolutely mirror to other sites. When you do that, you'll get readers that probably don't read on tapas, so even if it's just a handful of readers in comparison to your tapas readers--that's still more readers.

It's a lot more easier now that there's scheduled updates as well (Webtoons was a real hassle to upload to for kind of a while.) Doesn't have moderation tools, which is a bummer, but definately has a big audience built in.
