Hello everyone,

One of the many challenges we face at Tapas is simultaneously developing the mobile web, web, and mobile app experiences for both readers and creators. We’ve been focusing a lot of our attention recently to the development of our mobile apps which caused a lack of parity between the reader functionality of the website and apps. Our goal was to address this along with other reader experience issues with the new update, but we also acknowledge this update missed the mark on a lot of creator related experiences, and introduced some unintended bugs.

We apologize for the confusion that this has led to and I’m sorry if any of the updates have upset you. That’s not our intention and we acknowledge how you’re feeling. It’s always been our goal to provide an open and safe space for publishing, and build a platform that continually evolves alongside our creator community. Many of the user experience and user interface updates that we launched on the app has led to a significant increase in reader exploration of new series and long term reader retention. We had hoped to bring these improvements over to the web while also revamping the general aesthetics.

We hear you when you say you miss the personality that the previous look and feel of Tapas had - and we hope to address this soon. As for the stark use of white, we were prepping the site for new reader modes that would fill in the negative space.

We are reviewing all feedback being provided and will work on addressing those along with the bugs. As always, I’ll be answering questions in this forum topic as well. In order to help us organize your feedback, it would be helpful if you could also use the form below. Much appreciated.

We apologize for any hurt we have caused with today's update, again, it's never our intention and we completely acknowledge our need for improvement. I hope you understand that we are trying our best to be as accommodating as possible and want to create a relationship with you all that reinforces our willingness to engage in healthy discussions and enact positive changes. We will always do our best to answer questions that arise and be candid in what we can and cannot do.

THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT.
Love you Michael

Thank you for listening to us and asking for feedback. It means a lot

What I find unfair about this is that it feels we're being asked to beta test the new site now, after it already potentially hurt our work's visibility :frowning: I wouldn't mind signing up as beta tester before the changes are released, but now it doesn't feel quite right.

Glad to see y'all are handling this well~

Seriously though, a dark mode would be nice.. y'all already apply it on the Mature page for whatever reason, which is the most baffling thing of all the visual complaints I had lol that area looks the most visually pleasing but it's full of lewd stuff I personally don't wanna see dammit

Hm, that's not really our intent and I'm sorry that you feel that way. We're simply trying to consolidate creator opinions and trying to figure out which items to prioritize at this point. For beta testing we typically do more discreet outreach to select creators and compensate for that. Apologies.

Also, I'm stepping away from my computer for a bit but will be back to answer questions at 1:00pm pst.

imma be honest, the Website visual interface wasnt really a thing to prioritize...

Thank you guys for promptly making a form addressing the issue, hopefully our feedback will help!

This new version is just... clunky.
It was already so good before, and I don't understand why you would change it when it didn't need fixing.

The differences between the mobile app and the website were good, they made each version optimal for the platform of the user. This version tries too hard to make them similar and it makes the website in particular much more difficult to use.

A full overhaul really wasn't necessary when you could have instead made smaller improvements to better streamline the reading experience.

@Slimy_Boi_Enigma Really summarises the whole thing nicely. There really wasn't any need to change anything. The site worked very well like it was and perhaps only small tweaks were needed.

Thanks for listening Michael. Wish I’d seen this before I fired off my email haha

My opinion about the new look in overall? not yet, I will wait to get used to it for at least 7 days then I can tell if I like it or not.
So far the only thing that bothers me is the disappearance of my comic's banner.

First priority really should be fixing the novel section bugs, as entire sections of missing text (italics) and no breaks between paragraphs are rendering many novels completely unreadable.

That should be priority one!
edit. In this case I would have restored the site, fix the bug, and re-upload. Content missing is critical. The rest is just a matter of nonsens

Agreed. While I don't really read novels here on Tapas (I'm looking at starting when summer rolls around and I've got more free time), the fact that there are issues like that should be (and probably is) at the top of their priority list.

Not really a major bug concerning the novels section: but I just noticed with the new formatting, it gets rid of the automatic breaks between paragraphs.

It makes it hard to read unindented paragraphs, and I only left mine unindented because of the automatic breaks.

The breaks are still on the app tho.

People have already brought up the hidden subscribe and support buttons enough, but I'd REALLY like a dark mode if the website palette can't be changed as is. It's giving me a headache to look at it.

I'm aware this must not be the easiest thing to get data on, but one thing I'd like to add, is that in my small 2 years of use of Tapas first as a reader and then as a creator, I've seen a tendency of a deepening of the gap between the expectations of mobile readers and website readers. Obviously mostly around the app censorship issue, but not only. Although not a clear cut thing, I feel we have now 2 relatively distinct populations, and thinking that what works on app will work on website may not be the right mindset.
At this point, I feel a lot of people read on website to AVOID the app experience, because they don't like it. Obviously the new changes would be upsetting to them.

I feel it would be better to keep the app and the website different enough, to give the choice of the experience to the readers, and only implement changes that are adapted to website subsample of readers.
I understand the need for some universal 'Tapas' feel, but sincerely, it was there (black and yellow) and was removed.

I'm just a simple reader and this looks BAD. And I mean really really bad!

And I feel readers where not the priority at all with that design update. I feel we've kinda been completely forgotten. While our experience should be the most important thing for you guys. I mean focusing on creator is a good thing but if it is at the expense of the people who read their work it doesn't work. They will loose readers and you will loose them.

A fixed width design? In 2020 Really? Are you guys still using 800x600 4/3 CRT? Because from a 1080p 16/9 or a 1440p 16/9 it is looking soooooo small on every pages.

Where did the infinite scroll went? For me that was the MAJOR thing making me stick to tapas. Because it was way more comfortable for reading than on any other website.

Where is the side bar when reading something? It was really helpful to know where we currently are in the reading and to go back on a previous page if I wanted to look at something from a page I've already read.

Where are all the colors? now tapas looks bland and sad.

For now its all I've seen and I'm not I want to see more and discover some more butchered things.

To let everyone know: this issue is being worked on as we speak! I'll let you know when they fix it.

Two other issues that should be fixed now, but please let me know if you have trouble:
- Drop-down search menu being unresponsive.
- Everyone is a creator, in the comment section.

That is what I feel too. All that mobilization of the web is a bad thing. If I read on a computer there is a reason and I4d like my website to be adapted to my monitor size.

Screw the "personality".
I'm more concerned with the ever shrinking lack of visibility for anything that isn't premium or ultra popular with every change you guys make.

Woah, slow that roll, buddy.
Let's take a bit of a step back here and try not to lose it on the Tapas staff.

I'll give the staff their due, they seem much more responisive and fair than DeviantArt who are STILL trying to convince users that their 'Eclipse' thing is great. Tapas at least seem quicker and willing to listen.

I just find weird that the site reccomends you the same 4 comics in each genre (For example, Al the comedy comics have this same four comics in the "More like this section" and another differents 4 one for drama, another 4 for actions, etc)

I get those are popular and they worth the reading but I'd like some variation? Maybe, find something I didn't know yet.

Overall I like the new navegation better, less elements all around the page to focus the focus on it.

Look, I'm not saying that their concerns shouldn't be heard.
I'm saying that blowing up at the Tapas staff instead of calmly explaining isn't really gonna help much.

I understand the need to vent, that's why I made this thread here:

For their part, the Tapas staff has been remarkably responsive, especially compared to some other websites, and for the most part seem legitimately interested in improving their website to the benefit of both the reader and the creator alike.

I noticed that too. Always the same ones. It's unfair on lesser-known comics.

Everything is really hard to find, and for some reason the "dashboard" button loads so slowly I had to give up after over a minute of waiting and go via my profile -> my series -> edit my series -> add episode, and publish that way.

By everything being hard to find, I mean finding comics. I can't figure out how to sort by views, likes or subscribers, if that's even possible. The only way I can seem to find comics is via trending and popular the last 24 hours, all comics with no filter whatsoever, staff recommendations/spotlights, and some premiums... although those are really hard to figure out the sorting for, too.

To those who complain and claim this was done benefit the "premium/ultra popular": It doesn't. Please stop trying to make everything into a big vs small creator matter, this is a sorting issue at large. I was in top 5 in the old "creators" page (before it vanished???) and with this recent update I find it hard to find my biggest comic through anything other than my profile page. If it's that hard to find one of the most subscribed comics on the site then that says a bit about the new design's user friendliness level...

Now let's not be onesided. Things that were good about the recent/ongoing updates:
Full covers are being introduced for community comics
Integrated crosspromotion/suggestions provided by the site based on readership and genre
LGBTQ+ and GL genre have been added!!!!!
Ability to pick 2 genres will be added for community comics

A lot of good things are going on. We just need the design change to be adapted so it can fit into that box of good things and we'll be golden.

Thank you so much for this.
I was so caught off guard by the huge change and the negative backlash I totally forgot to look for the positives.

one huge disappointment for me with this update is the loss of the customised button that we creators can use to send people to websites or in my case the place where i sell my comics. without it then I have to consider if it is even worth me keeping my comics here and after being on this website for so many years would be a shame to leave now only $10 away from being able to claim my $25 its take years to even get close. I wont rush that decision and hope you give us back our customised button please.

Could someone please tell me how to access my dashboard? The button doesn't exist that I can find
