I regularly check out on how well my manga Blood Stained Snow2 performs in its category. Today I saw that it's on page 5 of 72 of all action comics sorted by subscription numbers.
I was astonished since I don't have a really high sub count. So I invested more time to see how others perform in other categories. In the end I had so many numbers I put them together in this diagram ^^

16
  • The blue bars are the approximated number of comics in each category (I looked up the page count and then multiplied it by 30; all in all we have around 30500 comics on tapas! open_mouth )
  • The red line is the sub count for the comic with the most subscribers in its category (the avatar of this comic is at the bottom)

My interpretation:
Comics like Gamer Cat, Silent Horror or Sarah's Scribbles perform really well because it's easy to share, relateable and evokes emotions with only one episode (humour or horror). Or in three words: short time entertainment.
Long form stories have a harder time. And no wonder: the reader has to invest time and attention to the story. Things that are precious these days in the internet. The best performing long form comics are in drama, romance and sci-fi (I was surprised that only so few actually do romance comics. I thought there would be more). Maybe romance and drama are so popular because most of the readers on tapas are women? (BL and romance implicates that) The sci-fi thing could be due to Yuumei's popularity (who doesn't know her : D ) ... all just assumptions
Even though people here enjoy creating action and fantasy, their sub-counts are the lowest with mystery. To be honest I didn't recognize the avatars of the action and mystery comic (shame on me frowning ).
In my opinion those are also the most difficult to create (including sci-fi): you need patience to build up the story and excellent skills in writing and drawing (if you can't see what happens in an action scene, people won't like to read your comic; you need to draw amazing backgrounds for sci-fi comics) and I think a lot of them cancel their projects because of those hurdles and end up in the "low-sub-zone"

My conclusion:
My thoughts about short time entertainment and long form stories are supported by these numbers. I shared this graph with you because I think other creators should know this too: Don't get disencouraged because your comic doesn't play as well as the top popular comics you find on the start page. We have over 30000 comics on tapastic. That are SO MANY comics. Now imagine the reader choosing a comic to read next with such a repertory.
If you do long form stories: your path is harder because you mostly don't hook readers immediately. Keep going! We all struggle to reach our audience, even the "big guys" wink

In the end enjoy what you're creating. We are here to share our love and we are A LOT of people. Don't let that disencourage you : )

Ooh, It's nice to see the spread! I thought there would be a lot more drama and less fantasy comics though? I guess my own preferences biased me haha.

But seeing that there's so many 'slice of lifes' makes me think it might be better if they had more sub-genres for them. Because some are like diaries for the artist, while some are gag-a-days and there's also actual stories with their own story worlds.... And idk, I don't think they should all be put in the same stack.

This supports exactly what I had been thinking, actually! So I'm pretty surprised at myself right now. XD It really is good to see it laid out in graph form. Very informative!

I do what I do and wouldn't be switching up what I do any time soon, but it's so cool to see what's the most popular! smiley

Wow it's weird how horror and gaming have a big subscriber count but so few comics. Kinda makes me happy my comic1 is horror haha. This is a really interesting chart you have here. Thanks for sharing.

@miesmud I agree with you, there should be more options for slice of life. Usually when I click on one I'm not sure what it's gonna be, kind of turns me off of them tbh

Yeah, I think Gaming has so few because it's so specific. In contrast to that fantasy and slice of life can mean any possible comic. Have some magic? Put it in fantasy. It's about school life? Put it in slice of life. Maybe gaming was created for Gamer Cat as a new category. I think this one was created in the last year. So I remember. Maybe because they don't want Gamer Cat to compete with other gag comics in one category?

Naw it's much older than a year old, mystery and horror are their new ones. Gaming was always that really oddly specific title that worked a LOT better and made sense when you could pick 3 genres for your comic instead of just 1.

There was a time when you could pick 3 genres? open_mouth Sorry, if it's stupid. I just joined 1.5 years ago ^^

Do you know why they got rid of that feature? It sounds more useful than picking only one.

Great analysis and thanks for sharing it!

Short comics with minimal dialogues and details are becoming increasingly more popular these days. I think some audience don’t want to invest time into a long comic unless you are published by a big publisher in the mainstream they trust or you’re already very popular.

In the end this makes me realise it is important to stay minimalist sometimes when working on a comic and not waste time. You have to give readers interesting development in your comic fast. Slow pacing can be a big turnoff for some of them.
