MFA in Creative Writing, now illustrating comics too!

Read NEPTUNE BAY, the story of Meg, a girl who tries to get over a bad break-up by escaping the big city and renting a farm, just like the characters in her favorite farming sim games! A traditional media/watercolor webcomic for fans of Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley.

HOW DID YOU EVER GUESS????? :joy:

love your designs! Yes, I do similar. Like, same jackets repeated. This guy often shows up in his puffy green vest, even if his sweater changes: [image] [image]

With the reality tv allusions, dystopia and such, I'm guessing something like Hunger Games meets WWE? Maybe with some pokemon thrown? Here's mine. Though it's pretty flippin' obvious what inspired it. https://tapas.io/series/Neptune-Bay Actually, a LOT of things inspired it, aside from the …

My comic has a more "real life" kind of tone to it, so it would have felt forced having everyone wear exactly the same thing all the time. Plus, I get tired of drawing the same outfits, lol. But I do try to keep certain characters in certain color palettes/styles so it doesn't get too ridiculous.

This is my hot take: Most comics creators are artists first, writers second, and it shows. I think that's where the whole "you don't actually have to be the best artist to succeed" thing comes from - because really great comics writing is rare, and so it stands out when you come across it, even if…

So I hate drawing vehicles, so I had this idea early on that my character wouldn't own a car, so that I could avoid drawing cars. But then it backfired, because she's on an island with no public transport, and suddenly, it grew into this whole thing, her trying to get around the island and whether…

I write a romance comic that's all sweet and silly most of the time, but I actually got to do an action panel recently! I had such fun  [image]

I've only started a few comics projects, and I'm mostly going off my prep for this one, but before starting to draw episodes, I had: a rough story outline, though most of it is in my head, rather than on paper. the first couple of chapters scripted, with a pretty clear idea of what the next seve…

India ink is waterproof as well, once cured, though it takes longer to set than a micron or other fine liner will. As a quick note, if you are working with gouache, you'll likely need to do your line work (or at least touch up) after the color is down, since gouache can be quite opaque.

What parts of the process are digital and what are traditional for you?

Your printer must do nicer blacks than mine. It just doesn't do a dark enough black line for my liking, and then any additional color on top of that seems to wash it out. Baaaaaaaaaaah on my printer!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I totally have pairings that work for this from my comic, but I can't share without giving away spoilers LOL :joy:

Finding Copic proof ink is sooooooooooo hard. In my experience, I was able to get my speedball ink to work with Copics when I let the ink cure for AT LEAST an our (longer is better) and was careful not to blend over the ink lines. I did all of Inktober that way last year, and didn't have much for pr…

One of the other challenges of working traditionally that's specific to scrollable comics - big panels! I really love the long scrolling panels you see in some webcomics on Tapas and Webtoons. For example, I'm thinking of some in Lore Olympus where Persephone's hair just goes on for days and it's…

I feel like watercolor is a thing you either LOVE because it's fast and free feeling or HATE because it's so flipping hard to cover mistakes, though I've gotten better at adjusting sections where I make "mistakes" and knowing what I can/can't fix. I honestly don't have the patience to paint with any…

YAY! Love meeting other traditional artists. Here's my profile! I work in watercolor, with outlines done in ink (mostly speedball with a dip pen) though as a whole, my comic is pretty multi-media. Process wise, I don't ever draw up a traditional "page." I really love the scroll of Tapas and Web…

Perfect! Can't wait to pitch

@katiemcguire For the plot outline, is it okay if we use bullet points or something like that? I'm used to traditional novel synopsis writing and I'm struggling to get my page and a half synopsis down to 400 words. Also, when you say plot outline, you mean more like a synopsis, where the whole a…

See the sparkle of the concrete ground Feel the WHOOSH of the bustling town What a feeling of love in my gut! I'm falling faster than the middle school's music program was cut! People dine at chez Applebees And the sun seems to smile at me It's all new, but I have no fear. And also - by coincidenc…

I just don't have the patience for starting over  Intellectually, I know something like that would be a good idea, but I just can't afford to add more steps to everything I'm already doing, plus I always am JUST getting the comic in by the deadline. I have enough opaque paint pens and gouache th…

Yeah, I'm pretty mixed media. Ink work is done primarily with a dip pen, though I do smaller details with microns/fine liners, since I have a bit of a hand tremor. Basically anything I REALLY don't want to mess up, but I like the line weight the dip pen gives me for everything else.

I just started uploading Rift Runners, one of my novels to Tapas! Here are some drawings of the main character, one back in 2012, one just today. [image][image] My overall style hasn't changed a lot, but I think it's a lot cleaner and more confident now. https://tapas.io/series/Rift-Runners

I just drew and painted something for my cover page. It's got my two main characters on it! [image]

Really specific one I love: characters discover their future selves/themselves in a parallel universe are in love and now they don't know what to do because they never thought of each other THAT way. The Good Place was basically my crack because Chidi and Eleanor kept discovering they had been in lo…

Oooooooooooo along with that "Oh!" moment, can we also talk about the anguished declaration of love/sudden kiss that sometimes proceeds it from the other partner? I know in real life it would be silly and dramatic but I LOVE IT SO MUCH IN FICTION!!!!!!!!!

I love a good enemies to lovers but like, a GOOD one. And like you guys all said, it's hard. I don't want it to feel like one person is ignoring red flags or something. Sometimes the "enemies" section resembles real life abusive behaviors tooooooooooooooo much. But when it's done well, ah, how I lov…

I really like the brightness of your colors! I think one of the hard things about working in marker is that most markers are midtones, so it takes time to build up a collection that allows you to work at a full dynamic range, between the lightest lights and darkest darks. First pack of Copics I ev…

Not sure if this counts as a comic, but it combines images and text, so why not. Here's one of my earliest "comic" creations. Still love it, honestly. [image] And here's a panel from my most recent episode of my comic, Neptune Bay! [image]

I tend to use my colours very deep and saturated too. I checked out your first episode and hit sub right away! Very excited for this. I'm curious about what kind of paints/paper you use and what size you work at. I've honestly been wanting to have this conversation with someone for AGES, but it's …
