I'm totally with you here.

As a reader, I wish we could have a button for subscribing/unsubscribing from a creator's activity feed. If I could, I'd turn off notifications for artists with a lot of live-stream announcements, and still be able to read their comic.

I don't want to debate unsubscribing from a comic I love because of notifications.

Why don't you open a new mini comic that would act as a gallery ? You can make an announcement on your wall when you open it, and only the readers that want to see the content get the notification while the other can check it whenever they want...

What do you mean ? like with archives and all that ? I'm not sure that would be a good idea since it would complicate things a lot. And many authors already have a link to their tumblr or actual art blog...

Creating a new mini comic isn't a bad idea, but it's a workaround, and we'd also want to include a decent amount of text in each update.

Regarding blog-like functionality, I meant the ability to include more than one image in each notification post, use hyperlinks, more sophisticated formatting, that sort of thing.

Honestly I'd really go to the "Extras" comic route. If I kept getting spammed with extra art I'd just unsub. That's why I think it'd be good to make the Extras comic instead so that people who enjoy those things only get updates.

The way the system works right now kind of sucks because those kind of things are relevant to the comic and should be posted to walls, like fanart, streams, extra art, etc., but it also means that everyone who is subscribed gets the notification for it regardless of if they care about it or not. I'm not someone who cares about those things but other people do, and right now it's unfair to both sides imo...

If I had the ability to post artwork and shit to only people that cared, my wall would be filled with that stuff. I hope this system gets changed sooner than later, for the better. ( ´∀`)

Yeah, it would be great to have some input from the tapastaff right now...
I tried to use the feedback thingy for some changes that I would like to see but it doesn't seem like it gets many visits and even though my proposition got votes, the staff still hasn't commented on it nor put a label (and it was almost a month ago)... So I don't really get how that works...

Just to clarify because I think some people are forgetting or overlooking this - there is a difference between wall posts and notified wall posts.

It's the notified wall posts that tend to get on people's nerves, mostly because there are some users who use that "Notify Subscribers" button for EVERYTHING. Making wall posts is FINE though. I mean, just the other day, I posted THIS on my wall:

Sure, some people saw it, but only people that were happening across my profile, and I didn't need all 2k+ of my subscribers to be notified of such a silly thing stuck_out_tongue

If you make wall posts, you just need to consider what is important enough to put in your readers' notification list and what isn't. As I've mentioned already, stuff like merchandise advertising, announcing a new series, announcing a hiatus, etc., basically anything that may directly affect your readers or would normally be important enough to make as a comic in-comic should be announced with the Notify Subscribers button.

It's fine to use it as a status update thing, whether you're attending a convention, showing off cosplays, promoting a comic from a friend, posting random art, or just NOOT NOOT'ing, you just have to use the Notify Subscribers button wisely and appropriately. You do NOT need to press that button when you make a post, so balance what's important and what's not and don't clog up your readers' notification panel, because then they WILL start ignoring you and possibly miss what might have been an actually super important update.

TL ; DR You wouldn't notify your readers with a comic update that's just a drawing of a butt (or maybe you do, depending on what your comic is lol) so don't feel the need to notify them all the time of things on your wall that aren't "YOU MUST READ NOW" type posts. In that case, you can still post it, just don't press the notify subscriber button. Easy as that.

As I am a reader, not an author, I actually didn't know that =) But I guess it fixes only part of the problem but not posts like streaming warnings, contests, prints, presence at conventions etc...) Stuff that are important to promote as an artist but do not have a direct connection with the comic one is following.

And we still need that freaking inbox ! =D

It could be a matter of automatically having the notifications set to a default setting of OFF rather than ON. That way, you can really see who the habitual offenders are. Thankfully, I haven't come across creators who have spammed with irrelevant and useless posts. smile

Its default is already OFF stuck_out_tongue At least from what I've been using it of so far. I haven't seen it automatically set to ON yet :U

It's off by default to start with, but after that I think it's set to whatever you used last time. So you have to remember to turn it off again (or in the case of those who tend to spam their subscribers, it only enables them).

A way to sort your wall would be nice, because honestly, mine is such a mess from my daily updates, thank you for subscribing, I like your comic, other various messages left by readers and friggen privet messages (cause there's no actual god damn inbox) that no one in any depth of hell is gonna sift through all that to casually check it for 'extra content'. So yeah, when your wall looks like that artists will tend to use the announcement feature more often for extra content and art / streams / convention messages. Cause there's no friggen way readers will see it otherwise. As stated in the forums, some readers like it, some don't.

On another note if there were a way to PIN A POST to the top of the wall that would be great, especially for those that update often and get pretty much everything on their walls pushed down from episode updates and 'thx 4 sub' messages. No one likes 'post more' 'why no update?' 'Did you cancel series is this still going???' 'stop being lazy and update' messages when they are unable to update for a few weeks because they are in the hospital waiting for a family member to pass away and then attending a funeral and the "I am out of the country and will be unable to update my comic." 'announcement' got pushed down by "THX 4 SUBSCRIBE" / scheduled updates for your other series you happened to have a buffer ready for / and 'YOU STILL MAKING ______??" I mean even with the notify all option not everyone reads them, and any NEW readers you get are not gonna see any previous announcements.

Maybe some sort of filter button that would enable the visitor to see only the author's posts when flipped on ?

This sounds too coincidentally on point, which leads me to believe this is a very personal problem for you; if this is the case, I'm sorry that happened, but you shouldn't let it get you so angry in the forums because you're coming across as more judgmental than supportive/helpful. Remember that it varies from user to user.

A pin a post thing might be helpful. I can't see it being used a lot for some users, but for others, it might be helpful.

Not angry actually, I just come off as that a lot of the time.

A good amount of these notifications I get from artists I watch happen to be "Comic is still on hiatus, sorry guys." "Comic is still on hiatus." "Comic well resume in ____ week, please be patient until then." "Update is coming soon, I'm working on it here have in in-progress screenshot" Which leads me to believe that I am not the only artist that gets harassed when updates are missed or slow. So a way to pin such announcements wound be beneficial for those in that situation.

Well, that all comes down to the individual artists who might feel the need to update their readers regularly. We don't know if harassment is the reason behind these. For quite a few artists, it could just be "well i want to make sure people know i'm coming back", because losing a fanbase to inactivity due to uncontrollable situations (ex. being in the hospital, moving, technical issues, etc.) sucks, and I know there are a lot of readers who enjoy getting a notification every now and then to ensure that the creator is coming back. A Pin program could fix this, but it might not either; it depends on what the artist chooses to do (especially if the pin is from say, months ago and they need to let readers know that since then, they're still alive and planning on returning >.>)

even if you'd post art and stuff under no-notify option, 1. no one's going to see it unless they look under your profile (which who randomly checks people's profiles for no reason? I don't at least) and 2. it'll just get buried under thanks messages and etc. etc.

Pin post would be awesome actually. I hope they implement that.

also I forgot to mention it earlier but yes x10000 to an inbox.

Which is why important stuff is reserved for Notify Subscribers. If you feel all that is -that- important people see, then you either have the choice of wearing out your readers by getting a bunch of notifications a day, or you can make a series for the use of being a sketchbook (and don't say you can't do this, because it's been done a bunch and there are a lot of series that are just sketchbook drawings, ex. Din's Sketchbook).

For me, doodles and random sketchbook drawings that aren't related to my comics aren't that important that I need to notify my readers, especially because they subscribed to read my comic, not look at my other art pieces (make a series for that, or even link to your DA profile on the left panel of your profile where you can leave links).

Also, you guys are more than capable of deleting those thank you messages if you really feel the need to. Most of those creators only come to your wall anyway just to post that stuff, so if it's really in the way, then just save the image somewhere if you like it, and then delete the post. If "who randomly checks people's profiles for no reason" is the point you're trying to get across, then you should know your own profile isn't being checked that much either, and no one will probably notice.

I never said "Pin Post could have prevented this!!!!!1111" I just said it would be great to have cause the wall is a complete mess at the moment and because of that no many people, even if they like extra content, are gonna go digging through creator walls looking for it or announcements. (and not everyone has the extra time to clean that up), it just would be a nice option that has the potential to help reduce messages like that when you are unable to update due to unfavorable situations.

Personally I use the notify subscribers button for stuff related to my comic, either announcements that affect it directly or extra holiday images that are nice to give to readers, but interrupt the flow of the comic of readers that will pick it up later, so I don't want to put them there (plus there are now rules in place that discourage that) I used to do it for streams because I did not do them often, but I quickly got annoyed by creators I watched that would post stream/hangout link announcements every other day. So I figured I would end that practice just in case it was bothering my readers as much as it was bothering me.

Something like that would be nice to have, I try not to be too active on mine except for certain announcements and streams which I don't stream everyday, some of the authors I follow are VARY active on theirs and it can get a little annoying after a while.
