The Goofball who has a really intelligent serious side cliche
Like Maiko Shuu. Most of the time he's like this:
But then on a few occasions he's the most insightful character:
The troll/grump who's actually soft on the inside.
Akane from Jitsu wa Watashi spends most of her time screwing with everybody
But deep down she has a tender heart and really cares about people.
I guess I've got a soft spot for secret softies. But hate tsunderes. That needs to stop.
Badass Lady Generals
nuff said.
MacBethian Characters
Especially when they're done well and powerfully.
Also, apparently, "moostaches."
One more thing:
The Wise but Crochety Geezer
I always enjoy when a bully and their victim actually find that they like each other. I actually didn't realize how much of a trope this was until my sister told me lol, but there's something so satisfying to see all that negative energy get resolved! Like you've been holding your breath and can finally breathe.
Also when a bright, innocent character gets attached to a prickly, unfriendly one ^-^ One of my favorite examples is the manga "Hana to Akuma" by Oto Hisamu or the webtoon "Rodiura Kurashi"
So I guess I'm an Opposites Attract kind of gal
Ahah maybe someone has already mentioned this (i only got to read part of the thread) but just. Unapologetically good characters, who don't bend to cynicism and who solves their problems by just being aggressively kind, even when things get bad for them. Of course, this trope gets a bad rap for when characters go through life like this without facing ANY kinds of consequences, but i think it can be done super well!! Dr. Kenzo Tenma from Monster and Steven from Steven Universe are the first that come to mind for me. I know everyone seems to love their dark cynical dramas but seeing characters who can maintain their goodness even in the midst of darkness gives me hope :'D
I've actually been wishing for MORE of this trope. Recently i've become tired and slightly annoyed with the dark and grittty characters in mainstream media (nothing wrong with dark and gritty characters but they need to be written well and not in overabundance)
I just saw the new power ranger's trailer and all of the kids are just so miserable it just made me wish for more stevens wanders and mabels in media.
"More stevens wanders and mabels" YES!! And not just in children's media, i feel like adult media would benefit a lot from this too. My favorite example to use is Naoki Urasawa's manga and anime Monster1, which is on the surface a pretty dark story about serial murderers and oppressive social systems, ("adult" content if there ever was any) but i consider it one of the most optimistic stories I've ever read, due to the main characters struggling so hard to be kind and good throughout the whole thing. It doesn't shy away from negative consequences in the world, but it also doesn't shy away from the fact that goodness does exist in the world alongside evil, and that doesn't make it less valuable... and now im just rambling but yess
I too am a sucker for the opposites attract/grump and not-so-grump trope (but not the "bully and the bullied turns into friends"-trope, sorry, I'm not comfortable with that) <3
I'm also a sucker for the "big and strong, but quite the softie"-character type ^^
(needless to say, I kinda use both tropes in my own comic)
Oh my gosh, I gotta say I'm a sucker for the Monster of the Week trope. The modern media industry kinda avoids it more these days even going as far as advising show pitches to stray away from it entirely. But... flip, I can't help but kinda love it, even if it ususally devolves into weak writing.
Anyway for those that don't know, Monster of the Week is a show style that uses a new monster, baddie or alien as the center conflict of every episode. Power Rangers, Pokemon, and Scooby Doo are probably the most cut-and-dry examples of the trope in action.
Although my favorite shows always twist on this cliche, turning each conflict into a larger story rather than isolated events. ;D I'm lookin' at you Steven Universe.
@jennula i'm uncomfortable with any love story involving buillies or abusers.. I can understand if someone writes a bully character going through major character development and becomes an ally to the protagonist. But yes i see where you're coming from.
also large soft sweethearts are great <3... they are characters that i'm instantly drawn to just by seeing them.
@JessJackdaw I write sooooo many stories to be monster of the weeks. I find them to be more lighthearted and generally way more fun <3. also a trope doesn't make writings weak. It just how people use that trope that can make it or break it.
I love gruff daddies with a soft spot for their daughters(I think one of my stories had a character like that, which goes to show how much I like the trope). Think the dad of the main love interest in Clannad.
Another one I am especially enamored with is Intelligent Fighters. Basically, these people use their powers in reasonable ways, and always try to cognitize a way to win. I appreciate logical fights, especially when there's multiple participants(My Hero Academia is one of the best examples of this trope).
What else...? Well, I love the Suikoden trope of "You have a castle and you have to recruit these interesting characters for your army." I love large casts, and the more different they are in ideals and lifestyle, the better.
And then there's the "Young man/woman becomes a leader" trope. I am a SUCKER for this trope. Points deducted if it happens right at the start of the story - it has to be earned.
Finally... gruffy men with hearts of gold. Especially, if they aren't too verbal, and show their affections by action. One of the best tropes there is.
