The designs are cool, but it’s hard to critique them when we don’t know who they are or what their role in the story is. You can present the coolest outfit for a character, but if it doesn’t suit them in their role or personality, then the design doesn’t really work.
From purely a visual standpoint, they’re interesting to look at, but from a practical standpoint, they’re probably going to be quite tedious to draw over and over and over again if they’re characters that might frequent your story or comic.
They all have pretty similar color palettes, which makes them all kind of blend together. It’s okay to stick to a theme or aesthetic, but you can still do that while also giving your characters variety in color. Not sure if you purposely gave them all similar color palettes or not, so take that with a grain of salt if it plays a purpose in your story.
The idea of them being made of glass is pretty cool! I think you did a decent job at portraying their “purpose” through their design, like the Guard of sight, that’s probably the one that caught my eye the quickest (pun intended) because of the contrast with the giant eyeball as a head.
Some aspects of the designs are a bit confusing, like i’m not really sure what the yellow fuzzy parts over the first girls chest and skirt are supposed to be or how they work.
If I were to rate them, it would probably be this-
1st girl- 6/10 - cool design but there’s a lot going on and it’s very visually distracting. I like her hair and staff the most
Guard of smell - 7/10 really cool concept with the candle in the chest, probably the coolest part of the design imo, the big noses are cool too but they make me laugh lol
guard of taste - 5/10 probably your weakest design up there in terms of interest, not really sure what’s going on with the bowl in his leg either. But I love the giant spoon on his back and the pattern you’ve got going on the front of his outfit
guard of sight - 7.5/10 probably one of the stronger designs, the eyeball head with little eyeballs around it is super cool, I also like the trench coat type thing going on,
guard of gearing - 6/10 a cool concept but i don’t think he was executed the best. the hat is cool with the glass hanging down from it and i like the bandages around him, it’s a cool thing that none of the other characters have!
I think you have a really strong foundation, but it’s hard to know what areas need improvement outside of just like “hey, they look nice” or not since we don’t have any of the necessary information to make that decision. They’re interesting visually, but not necessarily appealing in some senses, but I don’t think they’d be considered bad by any means, or unwelcomed if they were kept unchanged!
These are very interesting and unique character designs. I have to Agee with what @kalmia has said though, if these designs are for a comic, I would recommend simplifying them, like reducing the number of bandages on Sabriam or changing the sleeves on Isa, if you're going to be the sole artist.
And also about the color pallette. While I understand that these characters may be in a group together, like they're guards of the same platoon, they are too similar in color pallette to make them stand out from one another. I thin the gold, white, and tan work well together but adding one more darker shade, like a dark brown, could add some contrast. And why not have it where the each guard has a different colored glass. Like one has green glass and another has blue or red glass. It would go a long way to make them stand out from each other.
Last thing from me, I do think right now all of their silhouettes are different from one another to make them stand out but I think you could make their silhouettes even more different to make each more interesting on the their. Outside of their Headwear, they all have pretty similar body types. Consider contrasting them more by having one guard be really short or one tall, maybe one could be muscular and another chubby. I won't use myself as an example since my goddess characters in my comic have fairly similar body types that I wish I could go back and change.
I know you asked, but I won't rate your characters; I'll just make a note about each of them. I think you could do more to show that Pur is the guard of touch than just putting hands all over the design. Gaia is the strongest design I think but something about them feels unbalanced, like they're so top heavy that they could topple over. I'm quite fond of Thiao's design so I don't have much to say other than maybe add a darker color in there. Isa is really cool, but they could do with less details. Sabriam has the opposite issue of Pur in that their theming isn't strong enough. I think it's supposed to be wind chimes, but I would try to make it a but more obvious what they're the guard of.
There's one more thing that slipped my mind. It'll come to me later, but I hope this helps.
Thanks so much!
The yellow fuzzy parts are a mixture of a fabric that turn into feathers. Her outfit is a part of her form meaning that she was born and created that way- meaning she was born part glass (but the glass is magical and can move according to the body. She was my favorite design.
Her personality is a flirt and her design was also based upon chemistry.
I'm happy that you like the guard of smell, they're my second favorite.
They're calculative and quick. They're a bit disheveled (Hopefully that's the right word), but they have future sight.
The Guard of Taste... They're my weakest design. I designed almost all these characters in one day which was hard for me. He's basically a cook, he was supposed to have good taste, he doesn't fully seem to represent that as this design, though. However, he is careful and caring. Additional things he should've been are a social butterfly, twitchy, and has a poppy anger so I think I'll redesign him. His power was an infinite food supply, though.
The guard of smell was supposed to be mysterious, slow, and regal. I got regal okay, so I'll be keeping this design.
The guard of hearing's hat is glass wind chimes. She's a good listener, but my design of her doesn't fit in. I guess I'll be redesigning these characters.
I gave them all the same color palettes because it was the aesthetic, but I was going to do a different style of the story for when each of the antagonists come in.
I think I'm keeping Pur just the way she is though.
I thank you for giving me your ratings and opinions, I hope to personal message you on here because I'll be redesigning most of them. Will that be okay?
It helps! I don't mind drawing extreme details in a comic for that I like drawing details on characters. I really thought that Pur was my best character because I worked super hard on her. Gaia was the second hardest, but my problem was the legs because I lost passion and I was tired when I drew the eye guy, but I didn't really try on him. I guess I'll try and do different colored glasses, I've done it before. It does look better. It also does make it all stand out more. I draw a lot better when I'm on paper. Pur looks different on paper just standing not with the camera tilted or her body tilted.
Making them have different body sizes would be great! I guess I have more redesigning to do.
They look like a lot to remember! And a lot of those accessories and flair can be easily forgotten when drawing, not to mention the difficulty added when trying to change the perspectives. It sounds like a massive challenge for a comic character. Would work well for something more static like a video game sprite/model.
Although the guy with the spoon and bowl seems a bit silly in contrast to the others.
I think that while you may have achieved a sense of unity in style and color, these designs all (in my opinion) look very busy and cluttered. Not only will these designs be a pain to redraw over and over again, I think visually they will be distracting and tiring to readers.
Everything has a sort of symmetry, but nothing is consistent. Like one leg doesn't match the other on the same character, or the arm, or the armor. They might have the same shape but then the colors are different. Or they have the same color but the shape is different. Variety is good, but a level of consistency can make things easier to look at.
I don't know the world these characters are from, but I'd find it hard to believe people would design clothes that are so stitched together in this way.
Sabriam might be the best design, but those cone shaped things are so large I can't imagine someone moving while wearing them.
The coat on Isa has way too much going on like the designer had 6 ideas and put them together.
Purguard is maybe my least favorite because his clothes have way to much going on, much like Isa's coat, only its his whole outfit.
Gaia is OK, but I don't understand the color differences on one shoulder vs the other.
And the first image, the one with the hands, there is so much going on I struggle to distinguish her clothes from armor, armor from skin, skin from clothes. And the use of color may be to blame if not contributing to the problem.
This is probably going to come off as way harsher than intended, but in the end if you like it it's your art. You should do what feels right.
