I don't really choose things to read by genre... and that can make it tricky to find works that I like. A lot of sites and apps are kind of designed to recommend you stuff based on the genre, so if you read a really great superhero story, that has a tight plot, loveable characters and gorgeous art...it'll recommend me more superhero stories, as if the thing I liked about it was it being about superheroes, which wasn't really the case. Netflix rarely knows what to recommend me, because I base my choices more on the quality of the thing, or it having themes or tropes or a vibe I like, than the genre.

I like to browse the LGBTQ+ "genre" (which isn't strictly a "genre") on Tapas, because it's actually one of the most diverse and varied categories on the site. The only requirement in the LGBTQ+ category is that it in some way features queer characters (and it doesn't even need to have Romance between them, it can literally just be like... a bunch of Ace people on an adventure), meaning that it's home to a lot of the wacky, varied sorts of things I love, like Pandora's Devils, which mixes Fantasy, buddy cops, mystery, slice of life and GL elements, but also like Charity Case, which is more of a Slice of Life Drama with some Romance mixed in.

I like to create in that category too, because I don't really think of myself as "writing in a genre". Errant is obviously a Fantasy comic, but it's in a modern day setting, kinda like "urban fantasy"...except the power level is way too high and more like High Fantasy, and it has all these big swords and fights more like a superhero story, so it's like...okay, maybe it's a shounen manga? It looks a bit like a shounen manga! But it's largely focused on female characters and relationships, sometimes more like shoujo or even josei... I originally put it in "action", and then later shuffled it over to "LGBTQ+" where it actually fits in best, because there's stuff like "Magical Boy", "Pandora's Devils", "Hard Lacquer" in there. There isn't really a name for whatever this "queer, sometimes kinda magical adventures with feelings that might be a little subversive" genre is that contains things like Nimona or Lumberjanes, and overlaps with stuff like Steven Universe and Undertale... but there are enough comp titles that I know there's an audience. It's just tricky to categorise!

I read more history books than anything else, which might be why I mostly draw yea olde things. :joy:

At first, I usually liked Fantasy all thanks to WOW, LOTR, and Warhammer Fantasy and I still do but as time moves on I began to like Sci-Fi all thanks to the contents, and exposition such as Star Wars, WH40K, and Endless Space 2.

I even like horror but more on the cosmic side, and this may not be a genre but I love reading histories, and mythologies that dates back from the bronze age all the way to the napoleonic age and it's what inspires me to make my own comic.

Right now I'm currently making fantasy comics called "Mukhtar" on Tapas, and I'm planning to make a sci-fi comic that is in the Mukhtar universe called "Abbasia" and I'm planning of publishing it here on Tapas by early 2025.

To read, it would definitely have to be fantasy (only once in a blood moon do I ever read anything that's not, and the things I do read outside of that would probably fall into the mystery/crime genre.)

I also write exclusively in Fantasy. But "Fantasy" is such a huge hard-to-define genre, that can pretty much mean a tiny unbelievable element all the way to LOTR and Dungeons and Dragons. And because Fantasy is such a huge and varied genre, I'll get a bit more specific and tell you the themes i always seem to end up writing into my works:

  1. Pantheons (I don't know why, but I love writing stories that include multiple gods, and it's a theme in pretty much all my works. I really enjoy exploring the interesting tangle of emotions and meanings with divinity (Which is also why a lot of my works contain divine horror and trials of faith) If we are made in the image of the gods, then what does that say about the divine?)

  2. Identity (What makes a person a person? It's a big question, and one I find myself often weaving into the narrative as the MC meets creatures and people from different backgrounds and/or species. At what point do we draw the line between monster and man?)

  3. Family (I love reading stories where the main cast becomes a family unit, something that can never really be separated, a family of choice not blood. Perhaps because it mirrors my own real-life experiences with family,(with blood-family taking you for granted and found-family actually appreciating you) I always incorporate elements of the MC choosing who is theirs and vice versa. The Blood of the convenient is thicker than the water of the womb)

There are a few more tropes I use a lot, like there always being a child main character or LGBTQ+ themes, but I'll stop here before I ramble on forever.
[And thanks to everyone for sharing their own thoughts, they are so interesting to read!]

Favorite genre is romance/fantasy. Specifically medieval fantasy korean novels/manhwa. Japanese novels though I would say I like more dark fantasy. Basically anything like revenge plots or maybe killers being reincarnated.

That's what I like to read more mixed with a few GL here and there (I mainly like seeing how pure romance is described in GL novels not all GL are like that though like in any genre you have to look for the good novels).

What I like to write more about is science-fiction and action. Ironic considering how I usually avoid reading science-fiction. I do read many novels for work but I wouldn't say I enjoy it such as how I enjoy reading medieval romance fantasy. But yeah I super enjoy writing such novels. Why? No idea tbh.

My fave genre to read:
Psych thrillers, Horror, Sci-fi thrillers (like Blake Crouch's works), if they have touches of good romantic development then it's a total bonus since I don't like reading straight up Romance books as I find them quite simplistic and candy reads. I want to at least see what the main characters are doing in life other than flirting with each other all the time.

What I've written:
Fantasy Romance (my own version of a semi-modern Middle Earth with selected elements of the Industrial Age, no hobbits, elves, dwarves and orcs though), Horror Romance (has paranormal and psychological themes)

Slice of life/comedy, both for reading and creating. I'm interested in the mundane

I like Low Fantasy, High Fantasy, Space Operas, Cyberpunk and Urban Fantasy.

Probably comedy, and supernatural. I grew up reading and watching shows with funny characters and monsters, so it's kinda rubbed off on me and my work. Some of my top picks for funny and/or supernatural content would be anything by Tim Burton, Archie comics, Billy and Mandy, Courage The Cowardly Dog and Goosebumps for example. That's why all my comic series are some kind of funny monster show, I literally have a zombie as one of my main characters.

It's probably easier to name genres I don't read. I LIKE science fiction slightly above others, but I'm also picky, so I'd rather read any genre book that meets my standards (mostly in terms of characters and how interesting they are) than read within a specific genre, if that makes any sense.

The only one I never touch is horror. I am a scardey-cat, and even for more "gentle" horror that's more spooky and confusing that outright disgusting... I have an overactive imagination (obviously, being a creator, lol) and I don't like not being able to sleep for days after consuming anything horror. I also don't really read romance. I've tried many times, because I am interested in how character-driven the genre should theoretically be. I just get fed up with certain things that show up over and over again. I'm sure there's romance out there to my taste, but I can't find it. I do write romance-driven books occasionally, because then I can avoid the things I don't like.

Favorite Genre to read:Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror
Favorite to Create:Sci-fi

I've always been into BL since the age of 15. A first it was just a pure curiousity, but it kinda did grow on me and it's the genre I've been reading the most and now also creating a BL comic myself. I also like fantasy and crimi. Fantasy would be most definitely right the second genre I'd run to if I created a new comic lol

I like fantasy, sci-fi, humour, and LGBTQ stuff (gotta support the home team!). I also like other genres if it incorporates some of these things; for example, I will enjoy a horror with humour (fun fact: As a kid I was absolutely terrified by the Friday the Thirteenth movies, but had no problems watching Nightmare on Elm Street. The reason? Jason was a psycho killer. Freddy was, too, but he had a sense of humour about it), or a thriller/mystery with LGBTQ aspects, etc.

As for writing, so far the only things I've tried are slice of life/LGBTQ/Coming of age for my first book and shapeshifter fantasy/LGBTQ for my second. I've got a sci-fi "in the chamber", but that one is a long way off.

Horror, Mystery and Fantasy. Been reading that stuff since grade 5.
I was never into Goosebumps. I loved this series though. 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' a kids book but gave adults nightmares. I also like the Vampire Files series collection from the 90s. And used to watch 1960s/70s reruns on TV with my grandpa about scary stuff. Those old technicolor Thriller, Suspense, etc shows.

We have a similar relationship to the Romance genre. It's not my go-to in books I read, but it's what I usually end up writing.

My favorite genre to read is Mystery - anything that keeps me on my toes and challenges me to think. It doesn't have to be Crime or Detective-themed though. Any other genre incorporated with Mystery works for me, including Romance.

I like writing novels that I can enjoy reading after a year or so - when I've completely forgotten what the novel is about - so when I write Romance stories, it's always coupled with Mystery. I want to make sure I impress my future self so I do my best to keep it unpredictable to an appropriate extent.

I'm not limited to writing Romance though. I've written works for other genres like Horror, Fantasy, Drama, Tragedy and Comedy. I also mix those genres up depending on my writing mood.

Hm, I get it's hard to search for (technical/tightness) quality and vibes, but I've had little trouble searching for themes or tropes; that's how I find a lot of the stuff I read/watch, and I find I drop very few stories (not just because of sunk-cost fallacy either; I don't regret picking it up after I'm done) :stuck_out_tongue: Then again, I haven't found many instances of the stuff I look for, so maybe I'm not actually that successful and people just aren't tagging/describing the stories I don't find, rather than there really just not being many such stories like I assumed XD

I also get into a lot of stuff by watching reviews; e.g. the 'best anime of the season' videos a few youtubers have a habit of doing, which are good sources of that 'quality and vibes' info that predict my enjoyment of a story. That's why I suspect webcomics as a genre just don't seem to have much visibility outside of webcomic communities; because no-one ever reviews webcomics :'D

Fave genres to read Horror, Action, Combat, BL, Scifi, Dark Fantasy, Superhero, Shonen, stuff with a video-gamey feel (more a gamer than reader honestly so anything that feels like a fighting game, rpg or action-horror would quickly grab my attention)

Fave Genre to create is the same as the ones above. Current comic series is an Action-Horror x Shonen/ superhero but also contains bits from the Fave Genres. Usually anything I create gets mixed in with horror. Anther project in the works is a BL/Horror.

I am open to almost all kinds of genres, I love Bl, and also horror, comedy, drama, romance, action, mystery or science fiction stories without the need for a relationship between two boys.

The only thing I couldn't read would be a novel or comic with a lot of rampant violence, intestines, and bulging eyes in all directions. In everything else I have no problem.

My favorite genre to create besides a romance story would be a horror-suspense story, I'm very excited to work on a comic I have in mind with that thematic.

I tend to like comedic slice of life stories that are more character driven then plot driven. I do also like some modern fantasy. I like stories themed around found family, friendship, and mental health. I also like stories that are whimsical or just bizarre.

The stuff I write tends to be more slice of life and “sitcom”-like. I do like to add some fantasy elements. I also tend to have characters from non-traditional families, mostly because I just find it more interesting.

Well kind of like you! I love reading mystery thrillers and fantasy based write-ups... But most of the times I tend to write about hopeless romantic dramas!
I really love reading horror.... And to my dismay most of the so called horror genres end up being psycho thrillers thus mixing the two...
Basically I enjoy a wide range of genres but the romance surely doesn't hold my interest for long! ┐(‘~`;)┌
