What webcomics do you think have the best art?

Not just cute or well-drawn characters, but great backgrounds, lighting, coloring, everything.

I'm going to have to be cliche on this one and go with Lackadaisy (a.k.a Lackadaisy Cats).

The art starts off well but only gets better as the series progresses. The artist has a fantastic understanding of mood, and can convey it easily through character expression and dynamic panels. The comic is black and white (technically more like Sepia and white), but in the later chapters the artists adds very muted tones of color to set mood, etc.

Though since your research is about digital art I will give a disclaimer in that Lackadaisy is partially done by hand. The base drawings for the comic are all sketched by hand, then scanned. And then the rest, such as lighting and coloring and general finalizing, is done digitally.

I've been a fan of that series for over 10 years, but like you said, I can't feature it because it's mostly hand drawn. Thanks, though!

I mean, it's WLOP.

I have yet to see a webcomic with an inking style and figures that satisfy my personal taste.

I think Fisheye Placebo looks super beautiful. Very painterly-like. It's impressive.

I believe that the term "best art" is quite subjective since webcomics do come in a variety of styles and those can be perfect in each own right.

Anyway I'm listing 3 series that I believe suits your article which was consistent all through out the run of their series.

Gonna be a wide variety of replies because of that

as for my picks here's...a bunch (in no particular order)

I could definitely go on, and each of these are pretty diverse in style; but there's lots of webcomics that could be considered to have the "best" art depending on personal tastes of an individual

Lets see if we just talking ones that ive found on Tapas

Im very happy with this one, great work on proportions and consistency, Something I feel some webcomics lack (myself included) Backgrounds are also well done, at least the city scapes.

Same goes for this one, The detail to backgrounds impresses me and I wish I could be this detailed without going crazy.

This one I admit i have nothing objective to say about it, I simply just REALLYYYYYY like how they shade, it fails a little once you get into daylight but the night time lighting is beautiful

JK, seriously guys why are we asking this? Art is beautiful if people put their best effort into it. And there are so many styles how can you even judge on technical skill even?

TOTALLY AGREE, what makes these comics better than mine, for example? i kinda find it a little discouraging to put certain people on a pedal stool and figuratively spit on the ones you don't deem "best art".

Oh geeze. I agree with so many nominations here already. Lackadaisy Cats is a huge one for sure. William the Last and Hooky have already been mentioned and I agree big time.

Definitely Ava's Demon. HOLY CRAP.

I could stare at Rem's work in Devil's Candy forever. This is all of my manga-ka aspirations, right here, rolled into the most exquisite artwork.

Sleepless Domain is clean, colorful, and gorgeous.

Unlucky Is as Unlucky Does has to be on the list because the artist is amazingly skilled but also sometimes like... so ridiculous. And walks that line of ridiculousness with a beauty and finesse I envy.

The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn is up there. The art is deceptively simplistic but I find it really emotional and engaging. Mignola-esque vibes don't hurt either.

Ovbs we need to include Heart of Keol as well. I love how loose and yet detailed and exquisite the style is. Goals, man.

My answer is probably gonna always be Solo Leveling... I can't get enough of the art. Every week I'm just blown away by it.

It depends what you mean by best art. In a comic the art is important in shaping the narrative. No one artistic style wins over the others. It will vary from arrative to narrative. A plain background and stick figures can work for some comics, while detailed backgrounds and hyperrealism might work for another. Whether or not they work will depend on how its fits in with the overall mood of the comic, and how it enhances or detracts from the narrative.

From my personal taste, well-done mangaesque styles are my favorite! Freaking Romance and A Messed Up Fairytale are my all-time guilty pleasures!

And for super-stylized, gritty, kinda edgy dark art, Shiloh absolutely stole my heart
