It might seem odd because nobody uses swears in Errant, but I'm really fine with profanity (I'm big into Homestuck so....yeah). In the early script drafts, the characters actually swore a lot and I only changed it because the tone and content of the comic is otherwise PG13 so I was like... why not remove the cussing to make it more accessible and more portfolio-friendly?
Fuck and shit are some of the oldest words in the English language, and they're extremely flexible and expressive. It's actually hard to cut them out in an action comic. Just assume every time Rekki says "Crap!" because like...a massive demon is attacking, I actually wanted her to say "Shit!"
I remember seeing a "behind the scenes" of Adventure Time once, and the storyboard artists always regretted when as a reaction in an episode rough overview, a character would say "What the fuck, dude?" because as they said, "No matter what you replace it with, nothing is ever as good as 'what the fuck, dude'."
So yeah, love me that fucking good shit, but I never use racial slurs and I'm trying to avoid ableist words people have been using without thinking for years, like "crazy", "lame" and "dumb". Those are actually offensive to specific people. I kinda think the only reason we censor swearwords is that we don't like to hear children saying them, or especially worrying about kids using them in the wrong context before mastering when it's appropriate!
